MATRIX

Eastern Screech Owl   [Megascops Asio]

18.9 – 24" Wingspan

Matrix, our red-phase screech owl, was hit by a car in New York State in 2013 and went to Wild Things Environmental Education before coming to the Museum in 2015.  He has a "frozen" wing and cannot fly at all.

Many birds in captivity adapt to their handicaps and Matrix is a stunning example of that resiliency.  He moves through his enclosure in seemingly out-of-control leaps and spins but (almost) always lands on a perch.  He can even get in and out of the owl box in his enclosure, although we aren’t sure how!
