Artemis was struck by a car in southern Vermont in the winter of 2023 and came to the Museum the following year. She suffered a broken wrist that did not heal correctly and is unable to fly well enough to survive in the wild. Barred owls are attracted to roadsides by the easy hunting conditions. This is especially true in the winter when even an owl's incredible hunting skills are put to the test.
