Elmer

Domestic Rabbit   [Oryctolagus Cuniculus]

Elmer came to the Museum from Rockhopper Outdoor Education along with our assistant director!  We often call him an “unwanted pet” but in reality Elmer lives with a family and usually comes in to work special events, or travels with our education programs.

Domestic rabbits are all descended from the European rabbit.  We cannot say what breeds of domestic rabbit Elmer is derived from, but his similarity to wild rabbits makes him a great teacher and ambassador for Vermont’s cottontails and snowshoe hare.
