Red-Tailed Hawk [Buteo Jamaicensis]
Homer came to us in the fall of 2018 after being hit by a car in nearby Vernon, VT. She suffered a compound fracture to her left wing. This is an injury that birds rarely fully recover from and she is now unable to fly. She appears to be a very young bird, probably hatched in the spring of 2018. We'll know for sure when she molts in her adult colors. This happens when red-tails are two years old and it's when her current striped tail will be replaced by the namesake rusty-red tail feathers.
